MIT Metro Area: Boston Rate Plan: Sponsored Agreement Accounts: more than 1700 (and growing every day) After more than three years of sponsoring Zipcar spaces on campus, MIT has formed a closer alliance with Zipcar and continues to add more Zipcar parking locations to our campus. The program originally kicked off in late July 2002, and within three months more than 600 people had joined. Today, there are thousands of MIT students and employees using Zipcar. We have a large commuter population among our staff and, like any university, an even larger transient population of students, faculty, and researchers. As an urban campus, many of our activities have a large effect on the surrounding Cambridge community. We are constantly working to limit MIT vehicular traffic, and Zipcar is helping us achieve our goals. Our alliance with Zipcar has helped us address our population's concern over rising parking costs and congestion by offering a better alternative. Parking is a major issue at MIT. Zipcars on campus give people one more reason to leave their car at home. Students, faculty, and staff can also avoid the process and expense of buying and maintaining a car altogether. Because of Zipcar and other transportation demand management initiatives, MIT has been able to add over 1 million square feet of new office space without a single new parking space. Overall, MIT has saved over $9 million. MIT was recently recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
and the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Commuter
Choice employer for our commitment to commuter benefits and for achieving
the Commuter Choice Leadership Initiative's National Standard of Excellence.
Zipcar membership is a significant MIT commuter benefit, as well as a
benefit to many neighborhood residents.
