Metro Area: DC Rate Plan: z2b Member Since: February 2002 For several years the City of Greenbelt has been looking into innovative ways to solve parking problems at the City's senior apartment complex. The problems were so acute that the city was considering expanding the parking lot to accommodate more cars. At the same time, the City needed to replace an aging fleet car that served city hall employees. Zipcar successfully meets the mobility needs of 15 elderly residents and 17 city staff who rely on Zipcar to meet their transportation needs—with only two cars. Furthermore, many residents in Greenbelt have discovered Zipcar and take advantage of the service as a substitute for private vehicle ownership. The City of Greenbelt contracted with Zipcar to provide the service to residents and city staff in Greenbelt under Zipcar's partnership program. The city pays Zipcar a monthly fee offset by driving revenues on the car. Zipcars are located at city hall, which serves as a pool car for City employees, and at the senior apartment complex, 2 blocks away. The Greenbelt Zipcars are also available to city residents who become Zipcar members. The Zipcar and Greenbelt partnership provides an important mobility option for city residents, helps alleviate parking problems, and eliminates the need for the city to purchase a new fleet vehicle.
