Average Monthly Bill: almost nothing!
It's common knowledge that cars degrade our environment in many ways and keep us dependent on oil. As a long-time environmental activist, I knew all about the air and water pollution caused by cars, but I couldn't quite walk the talk and go car-free.
When I moved to downtown DC last year, I used my car a lot at first, because everything was new and I didn't know where anything was. I needed to run lots of errands while fixing up and furnishing my new home. But after a while, I realized I was using my car less and less.
Then I learned about Zipcar. That was the kicker that got me to finally let go of my car. I put it up for sale and joined. Now when I do use a car, I can use a low-pollution, energy efficient hybrid vehicle, a Toyota Prius. Now I feel I'm doing right by the planet by treading more lightly, but also right by myself - I have a greater degree of integrity by practicing what I preach.
