Immediately after a completely enraging experience at a big-named car rental
agency, I went online and applied to be a Zipcar member and never looked
back.
I lived in Boston for ten years without a car, and it worked pretty well.
Before Zipcar, my wife and I would stick close to home, occasionally renting
or borrowing cars when we wanted to go someplace out of public transit's
reach. More often though, we suffered from cabin fever and fought the growing
urge to get our own wheels. Zipcar blew
our world wide open. With the same forethought a car owner would give,
we'd hop in a Zipcar and visit out-of-town pals and family - three hours
to Albany, two hours to Northampton. I could keep my wife's birthday tradition
of lobster dinner alive by taking her to Maine for the good stuff each May.
And Jetta Jennifer got us to the church on time for two weddings in the
same weekend, one on the Cape and the other in New Hampshire.
We moved to San Francisco in 2004 and using Zipcars here is no different
(except for navigating the hills). One of our favorite trips is taking a
leisurely drive down through Big Sur when we have a weekend to kill. And
we've been known to spontaneously hop in Mazda Modesto when we want to hit
the hiking trails just outside the city. And IKEA can personally thank Zipcar
for all the money we've dropped there since moving to town!
For us, Zipcar is a utility - as valuable to us as electricity, heat, and
hot water. We could live with out it, but why would we?

My "almost 5" year-old daughter and I have gone ice-skating in upstate New
York, chilled out at a Buddhist retreat center, visited friends in the Hamptons,
and experienced so much snow (24 inches!) in Columbia county that we got
stuck. Zipcar gives us the chance to get off the Manhattan grid and experience
some serenity and open space.
