1. How does the fuel rationing work?

Fuel is being rationed, per government officials in New York, and will be allotted based on license plate end numbers/characters.

On ODD-numbered days of the month (e.g., NOV 9, 11, 13, etc.), sales will only be permitted to passenger automobiles bearing license plates ending in ODD numbers or any character (e.g. 1, 3, 5, A, B, C, etc.)

On EVEN-numbered days of the month (e.g., NOV 10, 12, 14, etc.), sales will only be permitted to passenger automobiles bearing license plates ending in EVEN numbers (e.g. 0, 2, 4, 6, etc.)

2. Why is Zipcar rationing fuel?

4. How do I find out what my Zipcar’s license plate is?

Before making a reservation: There is not currently a way to look up a Zipcar’s license plate prior to reserving it.

After making a reservation: Check out your reservation confirmation page. To find your reservation confirmation page, after reserving your car, visit “my stuff”, then “my reservations”. Click the “view details” link, and look for the license plate number under “vehicle” on the right hand side of the page.

5. Can you switch me to a Zipcar with a license plate that will allow me to fill up with fuel today?

Unfortunately, we won't be able to do that due to high demand.

6. What do I do if I get to my Zipcar, and it's not my day to get fuel, but the gas tank is on Empty?

Unfortunately, we will need to help you cancel your reservation. Please give us a call at 866.494.7227 for assistance.

7. What if I’m in a reservation and my Zipcar runs out of gas, and it’s not my day to refuel?

Please do not abandon the car! The next member will be searching for it. If there is any gas at all left in the tank, please try to drive your Zipcar as close to its home location as possible, and give us a call at 866.494.7227 right away.

8. Lines are long. Would Zipcar prefer that I wait in line to fill up my Zipcar, even if it means I may return my car late?

We would prefer that you remain in line to fill your Zipcar with fuel. However, please give us a call at 866.494.7227 as soon as you know you're going to be late returning your car. We will need to let the next reserving member know about the situation.

We understand that this is a special situation, but please still do your best to respect the Six Simple Rules and return on time. To assist with this, we are currently waiving late fees for members who return the car late due to waiting in line to fill up. As part of the Zipcar community, we appreciate you pitching in to help out with keeping our cars gassed up for other members!
