Zipcar Officially Launches in Ottawa

Zipcar’s convenient and affordable service offers additional transportation solution for Canada’s capital

May 6, 2015

OTTAWA, May 6, 2015 – Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network, today announced that its global “wheels when you want them” membership service is now available to Ottawa residents, businesses, visitors and students.  A total of 23 Zipcars are now parked in easily accessible locations in the Ottawa area and are available for reservation by the hour or by the day as an affordable, convenient and sustainable transportation option.  Further expansion with additional vehicles is planned for the coming months.

A variety of Zipcars are now located throughout Ottawa in popular areas such as Centretown, Lowertown and the Glebe.  The vehicles are parked in designated spots for convenient pick-up and drop-off and can be reserved in seconds on Zipcar’s mobile app, online or over the phone.

The Zipcar Ottawa fleet features a variety of makes and models, including Mini Cooper “Sinatra,” great for a weekend getaway, Volkswagen Golf “Bento” to zip around town or Audi A4 “Babushka” for a business meeting or fancy night out. Each reservation includes gas, insurance and 200km of driving per day, making it a great option for those looking for ways to save money on the high cost of car ownership. Membership information is available at www.zipcar.com/Ontario.

“Zipcar is thrilled to be expanding our ‘wheels when you want them’ service to Canada’s capital,” said Kaye Ceille, president of Zipcar.  “Area residents now have all the benefits of car ownership without the cost and hassles, while helping the city reduce congestion and alleviate parking demand.”

Zipcar’s launch in Ottawa builds on successful programs throughout Ontario. With a large number of Ottawa residents already using Zipcar in other locations, the company was eager to provide members with convenient access to wheels where they live, work and play.  Zipcar members can reserve and drive vehicles throughout Ontario or in any one of the hundreds of cities and towns around the world where Zipcar operates as well as at over 50 airports.

“I am pleased to see Zipcar come to Ottawa,” said Deputy Mayor Mark Taylor.  “Whether it’s to get groceries, go to a meeting, take a trip, or just to go for a drive, many people in Ottawa who do not own a car still want access to one on occasion, and Zipcar allows for that in a safe and convenient way.”

Local businesses in Ottawa can benefit from Zipcar’s presence through the Zipcar for Business (Z4B) program that offers discounted driving rates Monday through Friday. The Z4B program helps businesses save money, meet environmental sustainability goals and reduce parking requirements by providing employees with access to Zipcar for business needs and other uses.
