Zipcar and the Brooklyn International Film Festival Throw Back to the 70's with Drive-In Movie

BROOKLYN, NY—(6/07/04)—Drive-in movie enthusiasts, sentimental romantics, and even car buffs alike have the rare opportunity to experience, or re-live, an authentic, 70's style drive-in movie through the sponsorship of Zipcar at this year's Brooklyn International Film Festival on Monday, June 7, 2004 (rain date: Tuesday, June 8, 2004). The free event, scheduled to run from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. behind the Brooklyn Museum, will utilize 30 cool cars, such as BMWs, Mini Coopers and Toyota Prius gas/electric hybrids, from Zipcar—a new twist on a traditional rental car company that offers self-service, on-demand vehicles by the hour or by the day.

In order to authenticate the 70's theme, waitresses will be on-hand riding roller skates while serving popcorn and soft drinks, among other tasty snacks. Movie-goers will be able to sit in the Zipcars to watch the movies that will be projected on the silver screen —"Dead Kitty" by Rachel Max, "Gravy" by Karl Brandstater, "Day 26" by Andreas Samland, and "The Other Final" by Johan Kramer. Though spaces in the Zipcars are limited to first-come, first-serve seating, there will also be parking spaces available for movie-goers to bring their own cars to the event. Additional seating will be available at the event in a lawn-style fashion.

"Drive-in movies have always had the ability to bring communities together in a unique way," said Julian Espiritu, Zipcar regional vice president. "Zipcar thrives on that same sense of community and we are excited and pleased to be involved in this year's Brooklyn International Film Festival as once again, communities are able to congregate under the stars to experience films in a collective and intimate way."

"We are excited to partner with Zipcar for the 3rd consecutive year and to explore with them the drive-in concept," says Marco Ursino, Festival director.

Visitors of the festival will be able to see the many benefits of Zipcar in urban environments, as it provides a fun, cost-effective, and convenient alternative to allow people to live and work in the city without the hassle of owning a car. Zipcar pays for assigned parking, maintenance, insurance, and even gas. Members have automated access to Zipcar vehicles 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days of the year. Additionally, Zipcar's proprietary, in-car technology offers security in that only the member who has reserved a particular car can gain entry into it and drive.
