Wellesley College Becomes First In Country
To Provide On-Demand Rental Cars To Students Under 21

CAMBRIDGE, MA—(September 20, 2004)—
Wellesley College students, faculty and staff returning for fall semester will notice a "driving change" on campus. Wellesley College today announced a partnership with Zipcar, Inc., the new twist on car rental, to make cost-effective cars accessible to the college community for use by the hour or by the day.
"We are excited to introduce Zipcar as an important new amenity at Wellesley College, and pleased that we are able to make these cars available to our employees and students over the age of 18," said Barry Monahan, assistant vice president for administration and community affairs. "We think access to Zipcars will enhance campus life for Wellesley College students, faculty and staff by providing an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective alternative to privately owned automobiles when college vehicles, public transportation, walking or bikes aren't practical." The college will offer vehicles via Zipcar as a pilot program for the fall semester.
Beginning in September, students, faculty and staff will enjoy self-service access to Zipcars on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week, using a Zipcard to simply unlock the door and drive. Zipcar reservations can be made within minutes or up to a year in advance via a user-friendly web-based reservation system or automated phone. Gas, insurance and designated parking are also included in the hourly and daily rates. Unlike traditional rental cars, there are no extra fees or service charges for Wellesley College Zipcar drivers under age 25.
According to Monahan, students' wishes for additional and improved transportation choices contributed to the decision to bring Zipcars on campus. "For students who don't have their own cars, off-campus activities are often limited to places that can be reached by public transportation, the collegeĆs shuttle bus services or are within walking distance. Zipcar makes new options available to our students and staff, from quick trips to area businesses to a day at the beach."
"Being 20 years old, I am not able to rent a car from a traditional rental company," said Tammi Robinson, a junior at Wellesley College. "Zipcar provides me with an opportunity to get a vehicle when I really need one with no hassle and no worries."
Wellesley College joins other local universities including M.I.T., Boston College, Northeastern University, Simmons, Berkley College of Music and Tufts, who have joined with Zipcar to enhance college life while alleviating parking and traffic congestion in the community. In addition, American University, Georgetown, George Washington University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Columbia and Princeton University are some of the other schools that have established similar partnerships with Zipcar.
