Zipcar Selected Go Green Transportation
Award Winner

CAMBRIDGE, MA (June 14, 2005) — Zipcar,
the largest car-sharing service in the United States, was selected as
a winner of the City of Cambridge Go Green Business Award for Transportation.
The honor was presented to Zipcar for its efforts to reduce traffic and
congestion in the city of Cambridge as well as reduce private car use
by employees in commuting to work.
Zipcar offers self-service, on-demand cars by the hour or day to more
than 3,700 residents of Cambridge, and more than 15,000 residents throughout
metro Boston. Zipcar is proving that car-sharing can have a positive impact
on urban transportation systems.
“The function of car-sharing in Cambridge is two-fold. It offers
transportation freedom to residents who do not own a car or may be in
need of an occasional second car, but primarily Zipcar’s mission
is to offer an affordable, environmentally friendly, easy-to-use and reliable
alternative to car-ownership,” said Matt Malloy, Vice President
of Marketing at Zipcar. “Zipcar believes that by altering the behavior
of urban residents, and turning car-owners into car-sharers, thousands
of cars can be taken off of city streets.”
The City of Cambridge Go Green Business Awards celebrate business and
university leaders for their actions to create a more sustainable city.
This year, awards were given for outstanding environmental efforts in
energy conservation, recycling, and transportation. One small business
or institution (fewer than 50 employees) and one large (50 employees or
more) was recognized in each category.
“The Go Green Awards recognize Cambridge businesses for their efforts
to preserve the environment and quality of life in Cambridge. Many of
our businesses are active in promoting and implementing environmental
programs, and we want to make sure that their efforts are appreciated
and applauded,” stated Robert W. Healy, Cambridge City Manager.
