Zipcar Expands Nation's First Car Sharing Program for Universities with Addition of Seven New Schools

33 universities now partner with North America's largest car sharing company to reduce transportation costs and save students thousands of dollars

CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 6, 2006) — Zipcar, North America's largest and fastest growing car sharing company, today announced that seven universities have joined Zipcar's On Campus program to provide students, faculty and staff an alternative to the high costs of car ownership and keeping a car on campus. Amherst College, Golden Gate University, San Francisco State University, Smith College, The University of Chicago, University of Rochester and University of Toronto will join more than two dozen other campuses across North America offering Zipcar's award-winning, low-cost transportation solution.

For university students who cannot or do not want to bring a privately-owned car to school, Zipcar provides the opportunity to travel off campus to attend interviews, run errands or take a weekend trip to the beach. Unlike rental cars, there are no extra fees or service charges for Zipcar drivers under age 25. At Smith, Rochester and Amherst College, Zipcar will be available to undergraduates ages 18+, creating a valuable new transportation alternative to these students. Zipcar, which launched its 18+ program at Wellesley College nearly two years ago, is still the first and only car sharing company in North America to make car sharing available to drivers under age 21, without the need for additional costly deposits, paperwork or parental participation.

Zipcar also eliminates hundreds of dollars in monthly personal transportation costs such as gas, insurance, maintenance and parking, all of which are covered in Zipcar's hourly and daily rates. Zipcar members report they save $436/month or $5,232/year using Zipcar versus car ownership, money that can be put towards other more relevant expenses such as tuition and lodging.

Zipcar now works with a total of 33 colleges and universities throughout North America. In 2002, MIT partnered with Zipcar to address growing concerns about traffic congestion and rising parking costs. According to Larry Brutti, Operations Manager of Parking and Transportation at M.I.T., "Because of Zipcar and other transportation demand management initiatives, M.I.T. has recently been able to add over one million square feet of new office space without a single new parking space. Overall, M.I.T. has saved more than $9 million." During the first year of a Zipcar program at The University of Massachusetts-Boston, the school reduced its fleet of vehicles from ten to two, immediately opening eight parking spaces, while the car sharing program reduced the demand for student parking. Overall, UMass-Boston and local taxpayers saved an estimated $200,000 during program year 2005-2006.

Beginning immediately, students, faculty and staff at the seven new schools will enjoy self-service access to Zipcars parked on or near campus, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At many Zipcar schools, the vehicles are also available to local residents and businesses and the existing network of more than 70,000 Zipcar members. With the new agreements with Smith and Rochester, Zipcar's service is now available to the public in upstate New York and western Massachusetts for the first time. The company intends to work with the universities to add additional cars as the adoption of the service scales. Additionally, Zipcar's launch at the University of Toronto builds on the company's rapid growth in the Toronto market.

Zipcar has the largest university program of any car sharing service, with nearly 12,000 active student and faculty members. Among the schools that have partnered with Zipcar to reduce traffic, noise and parking demands are Boston College, Columbia, Princeton, Georgetown, Howard, Rutgers, American, Harvard University, University of Minnesota and University of North Carolina.
