Zipcar's Commitment to Environment Honored by Altwheels and Massachusetts Clean Cities Coalition

Zipcar recognized for accomplishments in taking cars off the road and improving urban life

CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 22, 2006) -- Zipcar, North America's largest car sharing service, was recognized at today's Altwheels Alternative Transportation & Energy Festival in Boston for its commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and city life. Altwheels and The Massachusetts Clean Cities Coalition bestowed upon Zipcar its "Best Smart-Use Application" Award to honor Zipcar's accomplishments in creating an effective urban transportation alternative that has taken a significant number of cars off the road. Zipcar was honored along with other prominent organizations and individuals leading the way in creating solutions to transportation and environmental challenges, including Toyota, the City of Boston, Harvard University and National Grid.

With 40% of its members shedding cars or stopping purchasing decisions of vehicles, Zipcar has taken a once novel concept and transformed it into a new category of transportation that is enabling a smarter urban lifestyle. To date, it estimates it has taken over 25,000 personally-owned vehicles off the road nationally. Zipcar members also report they drive less each year compared to owning a vehicle and increase usage of public transportation resources by over 47 percent. On average, members state they save $436/month or $5,232/year using Zipcar - money that will likely be spent locally.

Zipcar's car sharing service provides significant environmental and economic benefits to the people who live, work and play in cities throughout North America. By freeing local individuals and businesses from the shackles of car ownership, Zipcar makes a positive impact on the environment, reducing parking demands, traffic congestion and greenhouse emissions and replacing older vehicles with newer cars that have more stringent pollution controls.

Zipcar is now a critical element of the transportation network of many North American cities and University settings, enabling residents, students and businesses to get rid of their cars and still meet their transportation needs while saving time, frustration and money. Through Zipcar's Z2B (Zipcar for Business) program, the company has partnered with thousands of businesses and organizations to provide a more cost-effective and timesaving alternative to car services, rental cars, personal car use, employee car reimbursement, taxis and parking. Zipcar also has the largest university program of any car sharing service, with 33 active schools that have partnered with Zipcar to reduce traffic, noise and parking demands while creating a superior, less insular campus experience.
