World's leading car sharing company
launches service in Vancouver

Zipcar Delivers Vancouverites Keys to Car Ownership Alternative
VANCOUVER, BC (April 5, 2007) — Zipcar
announced today that it has launched its service in Vancouver, British
Columbia. Zipcar is opening Vancouver with its largest launch fleet to
date; 100 brand new vehicles comprised of 11 makes and models to be located
throughout Downtown, Kitsilano, Fairview, Commercial Drive and Mount Pleasant.
To make car sharing a viable alternative for all Vancouverites, Zipcar
also offers low membership fees with no deposit or monthly commitment,
and today launches with an industry leading fleet selection of vehicles,
including Toyota Prius Hybrid, MINI Hardtop and Convertible, Subaru Outback,
and Toyota Tacoma.
"Our mission to remove personally-owned cars from urban streets
is a perfect match with Vancouver's leading green initiatives,"
said Scott Griffith, CEO of Zipcar. "At Zipcar, we have seen that
a switch from car owner to car sharer sparks a behaviour change resulting
in thousands of personally owned cars coming off the roads. In addition,
our members save money that was wasted on under-used cars – a significant
share of that savings will be spent in the local economy."
Zipcar is the world's largest car sharing operator. After a successful
Toronto launch and rapid growth of Canadian operations in 2006, this expansion
will help make car sharing a mainstream part of Vancouver life. Zipcar
has seen success in Canada and throughout the United States and London
by providing the industry leading member experience, including low membership
fees, simple, secure technology, low hourly and daily rates, 24/7 customer
service, simplified real-time billing, and all-inclusive rates that cover
gas, 150 free kilometres, maintenance, designated parking, and comprehensive
insurance.
With an average of 40% of Zipcar members getting rid of their vehicle
or deciding not to purchase one once they join the service, each Zipcar
put on the streets of Vancouver is expected to take 15-20 privately owned
cars off. Zipcar members also report they save more than $500 per month,
drive significantly less and are more likely to walk, bike, and use public
transit. On average, members report a 32% increase in public transit use,
and an 80% decrease in vehicle kilometers driven per year.
Vancouver residents can now join Zipcar at www.zipcar.com for only $80,
and for a limited time Zipcar will also include $75 in free driving so
that urbanites can "kick the tires" and experience first hand
why sharing is better than owning. Rates in Vancouver start at $8.30 per
hour and $59 per day (any 24 hour period), with gas, 150 free kilometres,
parking and comprehensive insurance included. With Zipcar there is never
a deposit, monthly fee, or unexpected charges. To join, residents and
businesses simply need to have a valid drivers license, be 21+ and meet
safe driving standards.
