A Look Inside 6 Awesomely Futuristic Apartments

October 7, 2016

The future is cool to think about and everything, but before we get to flying cars and jetpacks, we should probably improve a few things at home. We took a look at how these futuristic apartments are innovating new ways to live in the city with concepts that range from robotic furniture to forest-filled buildings. They’re also designed to make city living more streamlined, comfortable, and super stylish … so more importantly, when can we move in?

ORI: Furniture that stays in one place? That's so 2016. Ori—built on the premise that the teeming cities of the future need responsive and dynamic apartments—uses a system of architectural robotics to glide modular furnishing units around your pad at the push of a button. Hide your bed once you're up for the day, slide the unit against the wall if you need floor space for morning yoga, or pop out a laptop desk when it's time to work. The technology comes from the genius minds at the MIT Media Lab, so you know this concept has legs. (Robotic legs, of course.)

SELF-DRIVING APARTMENT: A cutting-edge urban apartment that also detaches from its building...and drives? Meet the Tridika, which is all of our favorite things rolled into one. Though it's still in the concept stages, the idea—from the minds of Canadian innovator Charles Bombadier and Indian vehicular designer Ashish Thulkar—takes the form of a detachable room on wheels that can glide up and down condo buildings before hitting the road. That's one way to make moving day a breeze.

KASITA: The best futuristic apartments don't just look cool—they also solve the specific problems of city living. There simply isn't enough space for the growing number of people in most cities, but Kasita has answered with sleek, stackable micro-homes that measure just over 300 square feet. Each Kasita unit comes complete with a queen-sized bed, heating and cooling systems, a shower, washer/dryer unit, and kitchen appliances. The best part is they were designed to be installed in popular urban areas at affordable price points, so we can all reap the benefits. And although CEO Jeff Wilson came up with the concept after living in a dumpster for a year, don't worry: these homes are far from trashy.

OLLIE: There's nothing futuristic apartment designers like more than a sleek and space-saving micro home. If you're looking to move into an ergonomic nano-abode of your own (whether it's a studio apartment or shared digs) it doesn't get easier than Ollie. Ollie proffers fully furnished pads (plus housekeeping services, Wi-Fi, TV, and other digital perks), and promises the only thing you'll need to bring with you on moving day is a single suitcase. Home sweet home...no assembly required.

WELIVE: From the people behind WeWork (one of the most popular names in co-working spaces) comes the brand-new WeLive. Founded on the same communal ethos that made its shared workspaces so popular, WeLive is reinventing urban apartment living...and making it way more fun. From group kitchens and yoga studios to community-boosting initiatives like the WeLive mobile app and regular resident events—it's like dorm living for grownups. Not to mention that rooms come with those sweet beds that fold into the wall.

THE GREEN HEART: Another city-dwelling problem that apartments of the future are addressing? The hard-to-find harmony between nature and concrete. Most urban housing is far from green (minus these balcony gardens), but not Marina One in Singapore. Renowned firms Ingehoven Architects and Gustafson Porter have teamed up to create The Green Heart—an elevated, public green space that's incorporated into the very fabric of their urban living (and working) complex. Seeking to break down "the barriers between air-conditioned interior space and exterior shaded space," the architects have created an inspiring model for green high-rise life with reflection pools, waterfalls, and lush vegetation to go with it.
