NEW YORK CITY, April 22, 2021

Zipcar, the world’s leading car-sharing network, was proud to join New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Hank Gutman and Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez on Earth Day in Brooklyn to celebrate the success of the City’s car sharing pilot program.

Since 2018, Zipcar has partnered with NYC DOT to make car sharing more available in neighborhoods throughout the City, while also reducing the need for personal vehicle ownership. We’re grateful for the City’s partnership and thoughtful study during our successful three-year pilot program. We look forward to continuing our partnership, meeting the City’s goals of improving sustainability and reducing ownership, and ensuring that all New Yorkers have access to a vehicle without the cost and hassle of owning one.

Studies show that Zipcar reduces the need for personal vehicle ownership in cities across the globe, including New York City. According to a survey of Zipcar members conducted in December 2020, 38 percent of members have postponed purchasing a vehicle because of Zipcar, and 39 percent would buy a vehicle if Zipcar did not exist.

Zipcar vehicles are parked in municipal parking facilities and dedicated on-street parking spots for convenient pick-up and drop-off. New York area residents can join and reserve online, in our mobile app, or over the phone.  Reservations can be made by the hour or by the day, and include the cost of gas, maintenance, insurance options, and 180 miles of driving per day.

Zipcar members can reserve any vehicle in New York City as well as more than 12,000 vehicles in Zipcar’s global fleet.
