Zipcar and Amtrak Cascades Partner to Improve Travel Experiences Along I-5 Corridor

Zipcars are now on-site or within walking distance of stations in Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Salem, and Vancouver

Jun 6, 2017

SEATTLE, June 6, 2017 - Just in time for the summer travel season, Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network, and Amtrak Cascades, ranked by National Geographic as one of the best train routes in North America, today announced an expanded partnership to better serve the traveling public. Zipcars are now available for easy access on-site or within walking distance of Seattle’s King Street Station and Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station, as well as Portland Union Station, Salem Station and Eugene Depot, with plans to bring Zipcars to additional stations along the Amtrak Cascades route in the future.

This expanded partnership, which originated at Amtrak Cascades stations in Oregon only, enables convenient and sustainable car-free travel along the I-5 corridor for area residents, business travelers, visitors and students looking to explore and experience the region. With Zipcars in close proximity to Amtrak Cascades stations, riders can enjoy traffic-free train travel with the ability to use a car as they need one once they reach their destination. It’s a flexible solution for those who want to avoid a stressful drive but need a car once they arrive.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) own and manage the Amtrak Cascades service.

“Some people say they would rather take the train, but they need a car once they reach their destination,” said WSDOT Rail, Freight, and Ports Division Director Ron Pate. “Partnering with Zipcar is a win-win for our passengers.”

Hal Gard, Administrator for ODOT’s Rail and Public Transit Division, agrees: “Oregon is a national leader in sustainable and innovative transportation, and this partnership provides yet another ‘green’ option. Drivers can avoid I-5 congestion and take Zipcar for convenience and flexibility at their destination, all while enjoying free time and comfort on the train with Amtrak Cascades’ bistro and free Wi-Fi service,” he said.

“We’re excited to expand our partnership with ODOT and WSDOT to bring our ‘wheels when you want them’ service to riders on the Amtrak Cascades line,” said Matt Jensen, Regional Community Marketing Manager, Zipcar. “We’re now making it easier than ever for residents, visitors and students to get out and experience all that our region has to offer, without the worry or stress of sitting in I-5 traffic.”

Zipcar gives its members on-demand access to a fleet of 12,000 cars in hundreds of cities and towns, as well as colleges and university campuses worldwide and major airports throughout North America and in Europe. Zipcars are available 24/7 for reservation by the hour or by the day via Zipcar’s mobile app and website.

Amtrak Cascades operates four daily round trips between Portland and Seattle; two daily round trips between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia; and two daily round trips between Portland and Eugene, Oregon.
