Zipcar Expands Car Sharing in the Washington, D.C. Area

WASHINGTON, D.C.,  June 3, 2015 – Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network and the longest-running car sharing provider in the greater Washington, D.C. area, is expanding once again to provide additional “wheels when you want them” to residents, businesses, visitors and students.

In the last four months, Zipcar has added an additional 35 locations to better serve communities such as Logan Circle, Brookland and Capitol Hill. Zipcar is also adding dozens of cars to Wards 7 and 8, with new locations along Benning Road, Branch Avenue and Minnesota Avenue, so that residents in those areas have a convenient and cost-effective alternative to get around the District. Zipcar is also expanding along the major transit lines throughout the greater Washington, DC area. Zipcar remains committed to serving members along the Metro and has Zipcar vehicles located in parking lots and garages near WMATA stops - even closer to where our members live, work and play. Many new Zipcar locations are already in place, and the company plans to roll out additional spots in the coming weeks.

All of Zipcar’s D.C.-based vehicles are equipped with a special parking pass that allows Zipcar members to park in any metered space or Residential Parking Permit zone within the District at no additional cost to the member. All Zipcars in the D.C. area have designated parking spots for convenient pick-up and return. With Zipcar, there is no circling the block trying to find a spot or to avoid parking restrictions. At the end of a reservation members simply drop the vehicle off where it was picked up.

Zipcar currently has more than 950 vehicles in the District, in locations such as Anacostia, U Street, Takoma and Adams Morgan, and on college campuses such as Georgetown University, Howard University and, as of this past April, American University, where the program is thriving. Since launching at American University in April Zipcar has already added two additional parking locations over the past two months to accommodate growing member demand.

Zipcar has the widest range of vehicle types available, more than any other car sharing provider in the District, including a fuel-efficient Honda Civic Hybrid, sedans like the Volkswagen Golf, SUVs such as the Honda CR-V and Jeep Compass, cargo vans like the Ford E-150 and even luxury vehicles such as the BMW X1 and X3, among others. Zipcar offers an affordable and convenient option for people who do not own a car, those that own one vehicle and occasionally need access to a second vehicle, or those who need a type of vehicle different from their own.

In addition to adding more cars in more places, Zipcar D.C. is excited to announce that construction is under way for a newly expanded downtown office. The larger space, located at 403 8th Street NW in the Penn Quarter, will allow Zipcar to host more on-site member appreciation events, give more members access to visit with questions or to join, and provide more working space for Zipcar’s D.C. employees.  To accommodate increased membership and demand, Zipcar has added 10 full-time jobs to the D.C. office in the last two years. Construction is expected to be completed this summer.

“Zipcar has been operating in D.C. since June of 2000, and as we celebrate 15 years of serving the District, we look ahead to all that Zipcar is doing to further grow as the area’s largest and most comprehensive car sharing provider,” said Zipcar D.C. General Manager Scott Hall. “We’re adding more cars in more locations to continue to better serve the residents, students and businesses in the District and the surrounding communities.”

Zipcars can be reserved by members via the Zipcar smartphone app for Android and iPhone, online at www.zipcar.com, or over the phone. Gas, insurance and 180 free miles per day are available with all reservations.

Employees of local businesses throughout D.C. can also benefit from Zipcar’s presence through the Zipcar for Business program that offers discounted driving rates Monday through Friday. This program helps business members save money, meet environmental sustainability goals and reduce parking requirements by providing their employees with access to Zipcars for business needs and other uses.
