Zipcar, Transportation Authority of Marin and Whistlestop Partner to Bring Car Sharing to San Rafael SMART Station

On-demand access to Zipcars helps SMART riders get to their destinations while encouraging car-free and car-lite lifestyles

Jun 2, 2017

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., June 2, 2017 – Zipcar, the world’s leading car-sharing network, the Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) and Whistlestop today announced a partnership to provide vehicles for hourly or daily reservations at the Whistlestop parking lot in San Rafael, Calif., next to the soon-to-open San Rafael Downtown Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) station. Access to Zipcars will provide residents with more transportation options, reduce traffic congestion, alleviate parking demand and help public transit users get to their destinations.

Two Zipcars, a Honda Civic named “Hoo Koo E Koo” and a Subaru Impreza named “Lightsaber” (both EPA SmartWay Certified), are now available for reservation by the hour or by the day with gas and insurance included. The vehicles are parked at the Whistlestop parking lot (at the corner of Tamalpais Ave and 4th Street), directly across the street from the new San Rafael Downtown SMART station, for convenient pick-up and drop-off and can be reserved in seconds on Zipcar’s mobile app or online.

The new Zipcars at Whistlestop will help with mid-day trips for workers that ride the SMART train and choose to leave their car at home and provides a new way to get around for visitors and residents. TAM Executive Director Dianne Steinhauser noted, “This fits perfectly with TAM’s work to expand mobility options in Marin. We are pleased to bring together this unique partnership combining efforts from the public, private and non-profit sectors to provide a car-share service at such a great location.”

The two new Zipcars join two vehicles located in a private lot at B Street and 2nd Street. Zipcar members can reserve and drive any one of the four vehicles located in San Rafael as well as the more than 12,000 vehicles in the company’s global fleet.

“Since 2005, Zipcar has enabled car-free and car-lite lifestyles by providing a convenient way to get around the Bay Area without having to own a car,” said Franco Arieta, Zipcar general manager. “With an eye to the future and SMART’s launch in the area, our partnership with TAM and Whistlestop to expand in San Rafael will give area residents, businesses and visitors even more mobility options while helping the city alleviate parking demand and reduce CO2 emissions.”

As a Bay Area leader for over 50 years providing transportation to older adults and persons with disabilities, Whistlestop is uniquely positioned to work with community partners to provide viable and affordable transportation alternatives. “We’re absolutely delighted to partner with TAM and Zipcar to expand mobility options for people who live and work in San Rafael,” said Whistlestop CEO Joe O’Hehir. “The new Whistlestop Zipcar location is friendly to commuters and residents who may not own a vehicle, and the program helps move Marin towards a sharing economy. It’s a win-win-win, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.”

Zipcar provides its members on-demand access to a variety of cars in hundreds of cities and towns, as well as colleges and university campuses, throughout eight countries in North America and in Europe. Zipcars are available 24/7 for reservation via Zipcar’s mobile app and website.
