These Glamping Spots Will Make Anyone a Nature Lover

July 26, 2017

Summer is upon us and it’s the perfect time of the year to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors. But what if you’re not really an outdoor person? If the thought of roughing it even for a few nights makes you cringe, forget camping—it’s time to go glamping.

Short for “glamorous camping,” glamping is a more luxurious take on the concept: tents, yurts, or similar structures set up in beautiful natural environments that feature modern amenities like comfortable beds and indoor plumbing. Let’s (sorta) rough it.

HUTTOPIA: French outdoor resort company Huttopia opened its first location in the U.S. this year in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, just a few hours north of Boston. Their tents feature amenities such as private bathrooms, a refrigerator, and comfortable mattresses. Services include a food truck-style restaurant that dishes out freshly baked croissants in the morning and homemade pizzas at night, a lodge with a grocery store and wine shop, a swimming pool, and a slew of daily outdoor activities for the whole family.

TREEBONES: Located on California's Big Sur coast, Treebones bills itself as a "premier Glamping resort." While it does offer more conventional campsites, their yurts are the special attraction: they feature comfortable beds, heating and electricity, a sink, and even a wooden outdoor deck with Pacific Ocean views. For a slightly more indulgent experience, upgrade to the autonomous tent; a solar-powered cocoon-shaped structure at the edge of the resort with a private fireplace and bathroom, leather lounge chairs, and an outdoor fire pit.

WANDERLAND: Set up a glampsite in your own backyard with the help of Wanderland, a “prop and event rental property” that delivers and installs luxury tents throughout New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Their “Lotus Belle” tent accommodations include vintage décor and furnishings, a record player and phone charger, and an outdoor lounge. You may fall asleep to the sound of crickets, but you’ll wake up in the comfort of a queen-sized bed. Basically, the best of both worlds.

THE RESORT AT PAWS UP: For the ultimate in outdoor opulence, Paws Up in Montana offers glamping with a capital “G”—their luxury camping experience includes a safari-style tent with everything from heated floors to housekeeping services. Spend your days horseback riding or fly-fishing, and enjoy family-style “refined rustic” cuisine prepared for you at the camp’s dining pavilion by the private camp chef. Fancy a s’more? Just ask your camping butler (yup, that’s a thing here) to prepare the fixin’s—along with your evening cocktail, of course.

COSTANOA LODGE: Located in Pescadero, California (just an hour south of San Francisco), eco-adventure resort Costanoa Lodge offers both cabins and tent bungalows for a blend of rustic and relaxation. Accommodations are simple but cozy, and although tents don't come equipped with bathrooms, have no fear: there are dedicated "comfort stations" with restrooms, indoor showers, and even a sauna.

UNDER CANVAS: With camps and custom package options in locations throughout the U.S., the founders of Under Canvas were inspired by African safari-style camping and sought to recreate that experience stateside. Think airy canvas, clean lines, and wood stoves to cozy up to after the sun sets. Various tent options are available, including a family-sized suite that sleeps up to 7.

DUNTON RIVER CAMP: Situated on a former cattle ranch in Colorado, Dunton River Camp boasts spacious canvas tents complete with en suite bathrooms, gas stoves, and even telephone and internet. Start your morning with coffee delivered straight to your campsite. After a day of hiking trails, mountain biking, or horseback riding, unwind with a massage at the spa tent before making your way over to a gourmet farm-to-table dinner at the camp's restaurant. Now that's the way to appreciate the outdoors in style.
