The story of Zipcar

Our history

It's been close to two decades since our founders, Robin Chase and Antje Danielson, sat in a café in Cambridge, Massachusetts and decided to bring the European car-sharing idea to North America. Once the wheels were in motion, it was only a matter of time before some major changes helped grow our little car-sharing company into the world's leading car-sharing network. Today, thanks to a member-driven user experience, a focus on innovative technology, and an amazing team of hands-on car-sharing enthusiasts, we are redefining the way the world thinks about alternative transportation.

Car sharing seems like a simple enough idea, but there's a reason Zipcar has become the leader of cars on demand. It's not just about fewer cars and reducing congestion and pollution; it's about finding sustainable solutions. This idea is bigger than all of us, and we’re committed to our mission: to enable simple and responsible urban living.

Our mission

At Zipcar, we’re on a mission to enable simple and responsible urban living—a future filled with more car-sharing members than car owners in major cities across the globe. We do this every day by:

Delivering on-demand vehicles that support environmental sustainability.

Helping members save time, hassle and money in their everyday transportation.

Freeing up city space through strategies that consider urban, residential, commercial and city planning needs.

Becoming a premier employer for talented, passionate people who thrive on changing the world for good.

Living our core values, as a company and as individual team members, from the Big Apple to Big Ben.

A message from our General Manager

"We love our cities but they face some unprecedented challenges as they grow – pollution and lack of space to name just two. However, what we do at Zipcar has real power to help. So the mission our team have been pursuing since we first started in the UK in 2004 has been the same – to enable simple and responsible urban living. And our vision? Of cities where car sharers outnumber car owners."

–Jonathan Hampson, General Manager Zipcar UK

Environmental impact

Since 2000, our mission has been to create better communities. So we set out to cut carbon emissions, reduce congestion and promote multi-modal travel. Thanks to our over one million global members, we proudly lower CO2 emissions by 1.6 billion lbs per year and take away the need for more than 415,000 personally owned cars.

Embracing equality

Equality shouldn’t be up for debate. That’s why Zipcar was an early supporter of LGBTQ organizations and equal rights. We continue to show our support at Pride events and in how we do business every day. We believe people can overcome anything on their own—but we’ll always be stronger together.

Charity support

Zipcar helps non-profits do more with affordable access to on-demand transportation. Through working with partners (and members) including the Felix Project, St Mungo’s and Thames Reach we help raise money for their causes – as well as offer a transport solution that saves them much needed budget.
