Zipcar Officially Launches in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Zipcar’s car-sharing service gives Baton Rouge residents the convenience of a car-lite or car-free lifestyle
BATON ROUGE, La., Dec. 14, 2016 – Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network, today announced its official launch in Baton Rouge through a partnership with the City-Parish. Zipcar’s innovative mobility solution supports the City-Parish’s sustainability goals by enabling residents to live car-free or car-lite lifestyles and in turn, Baton Rouge is providing Zipcar with designated on-street parking spots in the downtown area.
Four Zipcars will be available by the hour or by the day, including a Honda Civic named “Blue Bayou” and a Honda CR-V named “Kip” (after Baton Rouge’s very own Mayor Melvin L. “Kip” Holden). The vehicles are parked in designated parking spots downtown for convenient pick up and drop off and can be reserved in seconds on Zipcar’s mobile app, online or over the phone. Each reservation includes gas, insurance and 180 miles of driving per day.
“We’re excited to give our residents and visitors another option for getting around town,” said Baton Rouge Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden. “We also hope to achieve additional cost savings in the City-Parish coffers by reducing the size of our fleet and using Zipcars instead.”
The official launch in Baton Rouge builds on Zipcar’s success at Louisiana State University (LSU), where the company launched earlier this year. Expanding off campus provides more residents and visitors with convenient access to wheels where they live, work and play.
“Baton Rouge is the very first city in the state of Louisiana with a Zipcar program and we couldn’t be more excited to bring our service to the area,” said Vilaire Lazard, Zipcar general manager. “Residents now have access to wheels when they want them without having to own a car or buy a second one.”
The four new Zipcars join four at LSU and three at the New Orleans International Airport for a total of 11 Zipcars available for reservation throughout Louisiana. Zipcar members can also reserve and drive any the 12,000 vehicles in the company’s global fleet.
Local businesses in Baton Rouge can benefit from Zipcar’s presence through the Zipcar for Business (Z4B) program, which offers discounted driving rates Monday through Friday. The Z4B program helps businesses save money, meet environmental sustainability goals and reduce parking requirements by providing employees with access to Zipcar for business needs and other uses.
Prospective members can join the service instantly on Zipcar’s mobile app. For more information on Zipcar in Baton Rouge please visit: www.zipcar.com/batonrouge.
