Zipcar UK COVID-19  Community Support Initiatives

During the worst months of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the uncertainty that continues, we at Zipcar wanted to help the communities that make our car club what it is.  As such, we’ve been working behind the scenes with the Government, Councils and the NHS - as well as grassroots community groups - to offer aid and support where it was – and continues to be - needed the most.

Expanding the Zipzone to include Nightingale Hospital

We worked with the NHS, ExCel Centre and Newham Council to temporarily expand our Zipzone for NHS workers. During the worst of the crisis, NHS workers could pick up and drop off a Flex car on a section of roads north of the Nightingale Hospital (ExCel Centre).

Supporting NHS volunteers

At Zipcar, we were pleased to hear of the UK government’s call for 250,000 volunteers to help the NHS to deliver help to those most at risk from the virus, and the overwhelming response they had to this. For any Zipcar member that was an NHS volunteer who requested any support from us to complete their volunteering, we gave them £50 driving credit as a thank you to them for their generosity and support for the community.

Council Hubs

Council Hubs

Through Zipcar for Business – the B2B side of our organisation - we already work with a number of councils to supply them with reduced rate vehicles, and vehicles used exclusively for their operations. During this time, we extended this relationship to include Council’s emergency response team hubs that were set up for council employees and volunteers to supply essential supplies to shielded residents within their borough. We were able to supply additional vehicles where they needed, at cost price.  We also extended a 50% discount on Zipcar journeys for staff to use for personal, essential trips as a thank you for all the hard work they were doing to support our communities.

Giving cost price vehicles to those in need

We already work with a number of food banks within London through our B2B arm, Zipcar for Business, providing these charities with reduced rate vehicles. During this time, we also provided cost price vehicles to those most in need, including Norwood Food Bank.

Thanking organisations going the extra mile

There’s never been a more important time for us to all come together and help where we can. That’s why we collaborated with companies such as British Airways to support those involved in the fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19) to get to where they need to be.  As a thank you to all staff volunteering to help the NHS, we gave them up to 50% off trips with Zipcar.

Grassroots support

Grassroots support

A large proportion of the initial support that sprung up at the start of the pandemic was local people coming together to support those most in need - vulnerable, self-isolating - in their local area, community, or street.  We’ve offered our services to the COVID-19 Support groups, who have been using driving credit to collect and deliver important supplies in their area. This has been used by COVID-19 groups throughout London, including Nunhead and Telegraph Hill.  We have also supported grassroots charities set up to support specific needs, such as the Help Lewisham Hospital initiative.
