Zipcar UK is committed to achieving net zero

By 2050 Zipcar UK will be net zero. As we continue to deliver more electric vehicles for our members we want to focus on other areas we can improve on as we move towards our net zero commitments. Since the beginning of 2021, we've been measuring our carbon output across direct emissions, indirect emissions and other categories including fuel and energy, waste, business travel and employee commuting.

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the baseline and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract.

  • Fleet team using bicycles for rebalancing our vehicles (moving them to high-demand locations throughout the day)

  • We have been progressively changing all light fittings to LEDs on motion sensors in London and Bracknell offices (rather than on/off switching)

  • Introduced hybrid working with most people in no more than two days a week

  • Adoption of Zoom and Teams means we have cut domestic travel

  • Started to reduce how many plastic Zipcards (vehicle access cards) we send out to members. Saved 768Kg in plastic in 2020

  • We have a Cycle to work scheme to encourage staff to cycle to work.

  • Our mobile cleaning team use 100% electric vans across their fleet and utilise fully biodegradable cleaning products.

Future Carbon Reduction Initiatives

As for the future, we hope to implement further measures to help Zipcar UK on it's way to being net zero by 2050. Including the following initiatives...

  • Zipcar’s aim is to have a fully electric fleet by 2025

  • Growing our electric Flex fleet by adding 100 extra electric vehicles by the end of 2022

  • Launch an EV salary sacrifice scheme for employees

  • Onboard employees onto a digital platform to drive carbon-friendly actions which can be converted into rewards (CO2 Hero app)

  • Fully eliminate plastic Zipcards and operate app-only vehicle entry
