It’s time to venture outside the capital for your next outdoor excursion. These beautiful walks near London take in rolling countryside, coastal paths, meandering rivers and historic towns. Wheathampstead Heritage Trails

With six interesting and varied heritage trails to choose from, this sleepy and historic village in Hertfordshire is a popular destination for walkers. Follow the crystal-clear River Lea along the Lea Valley Circle, stroll through beautiful meadows and the impressive Devil’s Dyke – an ancient Celtic defensive mound – and even follow ancient thoroughfares created by the Romans.

Wye Downs Walk

This circular walk in Kent around the village of Wye follows part of the North Downs Way and passes through the Kent Downs AONB, with landmarks like the Wye Crown cut into the chalk of the North Downs above the village. There are also some beautiful views over the Devil’s Kneading Trough, which is the largest and steepest of the hills of the Downs, and characteristic of the area.

River Wey Navigations

Follow the route of the last commercial barges on the Wey Navigations website. The circular walk in Surrey follows the towpath, meaning it’s accessible for pushchairs and there’s no need for wellies! This reasonably flat yet picturesque Surrey walk is easy to navigate and has plenty of opportunities to stop for refreshments, making it ideal for city-dwellers who are more at home in high heels than hiking boots!

Mersea Island

Boasting the title of the most easterly inhabited island in the UK, Mersea is a lesser-known beauty spot in Essex, and a popular destination for country walks in Essex. It’s just beautiful all year round, with miles of unspoilt coastline walks and plenty of native seabirds to spot. The only way onto the island is via the Strood causeway, so be sure to check the tide before you set off for Mersea.

Seven Sisters Country Park

A far cry from Seven Sisters in Tottenham, this is one of the most famous places for walks in East Sussex, and it’s easy to see why. The dramatic chalky white cliffs offer an incredible backdrop for a coastal walk along the South Downs Way National Trail, with beautiful views across the English Channel and walks of varying lengths all starting from the Visitor Centre.
