The Best Destinations & Activities for a Winter Getaway

Looking to go somewhere sunny and warm? Craving some fun in the snow? No matter what you’re in the mood for this winter, you can find it without leaving the country. Here’s some of the best places to check out when you’re traveling this season.

Enjoy the Wintery Weather in Boston, Massachusetts

Boston has plenty to offer in the wintertime. Take in the crisp winter air and head for a walk on the Freedom Trail or bring your ice skates for an afternoon at Boston Common. The Taza Chocolate Factory offers tours (and samples!) Wednesday through Friday. If you’re after more indoor activities in the city, there are plenty of museums, art galleries and shops to take in while visiting Boston.

Head to NYC and Enjoy Winter in Style

When it comes to winter celebrations, New York City, New York is known for pulling out all the stops. The NYC Winter Lantern Festival holds events in Staten Island, Queens, and Long Island and has extravagant lantern and light displays. The William Vale Winter Spa is a great way to indulge in some self-care. And of course, no trip to NYC is complete without taking in a Broadway show and some world-class dining.

Take in Some Fun Winter Festivals in Austin, Texas

Austin might not be blanketed in bright white snow during the winter months but it's still one of the best winter destinations in the US. The OUTsider Festival celebrates LGBTQIA+ artists every February, and during the same month, the Austin Oyster Festival attracts foodies from across the country. Of course, the city’s winter weather is typically mild, so while you’re there, take advantage of the warmth and enjoy an urban hike or spend time in one of the city’s lush parks.

Visit the Nation’s Capital

Washington, D.C., is one of the best places to visit in December. You can usually get a great rate on a hotel room during the off-season. While you're in the city, you can take a walking tour, visit the White House, and see exhibits at the Smithsonian Museums. Make time to visit The Wharf, which features a variety of events, including concerts, winter activities, and sporting events, all winter long.

Explore the City in San Francisco, California

If it's an experience you're looking for, San Francisco is full of them. Union Square has plenty of free performances and winter-themed events. Alcatraz cruises run seven days a week and include visits to Fisherman’s Wharf and the infamous Alcatraz prison. And the best part of visiting San Francisco in wintertime? You'll miss out on the summer tourist rush, so crowds are minimal.
