Zipcar and Miami-Dade County Partner to Add Car-Sharing Vehicles along Metrorail Lines

MIAMI, Fla., August 25, 2017 – Zipcar, the world’s leading car-sharing network, and Miami-Dade County, today announced a new partnership to add Zipcars to five Metrorail stations, providing transit riders with on-demand access to vehicles parked at train stops. The partnership seeks to increase the number of sustainable mobility options throughout Miami-Dade County, while in turn reducing personal vehicle ownership, traffic, congestion and CO2 emissions.

Ten Zipcars, including a Ford Focus named “Semester” and a Toyota Prius named “Paddy,” are available for reservation along the green and orange lines at the following five Metrorail Stations:

  • Vizcaya Station
  • Coconut Grove Station
  • Palmetto Station
  • Hialeah Station
  • Earlington Heights Station

After becoming a member, the vehicles can be reserved in seconds on Zipcar’s mobile app, making it a convenient solution for transit riders who need quick access to a car at the beginning or end of their trip. The vehicles are available by the hour or by the day and include the cost of gas, maintenance, insurance and 180 miles of driving.

“Miami-Dade County already has ride-sharing services in place throughout the County, and now we’re making car-sharing that much more accessible,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.  “What this means is that our transit riders can leave their cars at home, ride our system, and if they need a car for anything in between, there will be Zipcars available to reserve.  By adding Zipcars to our Metrorail stations, this option will help close that first and last mile gap.”

Zipcar’s new Metrorail locations build on the company’s success throughout South Florida where it has been operating since November of 2012. With a number of students, residents and local businesses already using Zipcar, the company was eager to partner with Miami-Dade County to provide transit riders with convenient access to wheels where they want them. Zipcar members can reserve and drive any Zipcar throughout Miami-Dade as well as more than 12,000 vehicles in the company’s global fleet.

“At Zipcar, we’re big fans of public transit. We know that it’s an important part of our members’ transportation portfolio and together, the two services complement one another, offering members greater connectivity and the ability to live car-free or car-lite,” said Vilaire Lazard, Zipcar general manager. “We’re excited to team up with Miami-Dade County, providing an easy way for Zipcar members to explore neighborhoods and communities that are beyond the reach of the Metrorail from South Beach to Hialeah.”
