Throughout 2023, Zipcar will be expanding its electric vehicle (EV) fleet and commits to allocating 25% of its electric fleet to disadvantaged communities in need of affordable and convenient vehicles for driving to appointments, errands or to visit friends and family. 

With this commitment, we are proud to join the White House EV Acceleration Challenge, which supports a historic effort to transition the United States to EVs under the current Administration. Equitable access to transportation and environmental sustainability is a key benefit of the car-free and car-lite lifestyle Zipcar enables, especially with the increasing adoption of EVs.

And, we know there is a genuine need to support access to electric vehicles, especially to communities that may not be able to afford the cost of ownership and specific EV requirements such as dedicated charging, parking and maintenance. 

Zipcar’s History of Supporting Disadvantaged Communities: 

Zipcar was the first car-sharing provider in the U.S. to introduce both EVs to its shared fleet and to overburdened communities; EVs were added to the fleet in Boston in 2002 and today, nearly half of its EV fleet serves environmental justice populations. In 2017, Zipcar was the first to serve low-income communities with EV through Our Community CarShare (OCCS), a program in partnership with the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District, the Sacramento Housing Authority, and Breathe California, which continues to expand. Recently, Zipcar was awarded a $1,792,000 grant to provide electric car sharing in overburdened communities in New Jersey and plans to roll out EVs by year’s end. 

With recent developments in infrastructure, public policy and increased consumer interest coupled with Zipcar’s twenty years of car-sharing expertise, Zipcar is well-positioned to bring the best professionally maintained, shared EV fleet to cities, campuses, business and overburdened communities nationwide.
